I attempted to begin this blog a few months ago after a hurricane kept me stuck inside one weekend and I stumbled upon a world of bloggers that I was really interested in. I think I wrote 3 or 4 posts before it fell to the wayside. I think part of the problem then was that I was thinking that my life is not really that interesting- would people really want to read about it? But new year, another try. I realize now that this blog is for me and that is enough of a reason to keep it up. If other people eventually happen to read then great, but if not that’s fine too. So, here it goes…
This morning I woke up and ate my pretty routine breakfast of fresh blueberries, strawberries and blackberries with vanilla Chobani, a sprinkle of vanilla almond crunch granola and a few walnuts. I then went to the gym for my Friday sculpt class. I used to never go to classes routinely besides a weekly yoga class. I would go to occasional kickbox or weights classes when a friend would ask me to go with them or if the mood just struck. But about 5 or 6 months ago I was not in the mood to do anything on my own in the gym so I went to a sculpt class on a Friday morning. I haven’t missed a Friday since. I love using free weight and this class is great and gives me ideas that I can use on my own throughout the rest of the week as well. It also incorporates some cardio that is not just straight running like my body is probably used to. Last night I also went to a random spin class. I haven’t done a spin class in probably 2 years and I’ve only done it a handful of times in my life. I don’t love spin because I like to go to classes where I will learn new workouts that I couldn’t do on my own and spin just doesn’t feel like the best work out to me. But it was fun enough and I’m glad I did something physical yesterday because otherwise I probably wouldn’t have.
I just came home and had a peanut butter and jelly on to get some protein in within a half hour after my workout and now I need to shower before I run some errands. I also started The Hunger Games yesterday and it is so compelling I can’t wait to read more. I had no intention of reading this book even though I have heard so much about it. But Nick received a book as a gift that he already had so he exchanged it for a copy of The Hunger Games. Since I had just finished another book, The Violets of March that I read as part of the December Book Club on the PBFingers blog, I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m so glad I did- it is captivating. So that’s on the agenda if I have some extra free time before work too. TGIF.
I spent all morning running around doing various errands and things today. First I had breakfast which was instant cinnamon swirl oatmeal made with fat-free milk and I threw in a handful of blueberries. I really like this Quaker oatmeal with fiber because it’s not TOO high in sugar like so many are. But once I use all the oatmeal in my pantry I plan on buying some plain oats and making it myself.
After breakfast I ran a bunch of errands. I also made a stop at Whole Foods where I got some of the self-churn oven roasted peanut butter. It’s my fave! And I love that it’s fresh and has no added ingredients.
I came home starving and made myself a broccoli mushroom and cheese egg white omelet- delicious, nutritious and super easy! I also enjoyed a whole grain English muffin on the side- well half while the omelet was cooking because I was so hungry. I use Sargento reduced fat provolone- definitely don’t miss the fat!
I told myself all day I would go to the gym but never got up the energy to go for some reason. Luckily, my friend Marisa called me to go for a walk at a nearby hilly trail. It was supposed to be a walk. A few minutes in we realized we were being eaten by tons of mosquitoes. Our walk quickly turned into us running out of there to avoid the critters! I seriously have about 10 bug bites now and am itching like crazy! Ugh! After we decided to meet 2 of our friends at Outback for dinner. I ordered the grilled Mahi which shocking had under 400 calories and was really tasty! I’d definitely recommend it! I hadn’t been in outback for a long time and they actually did some renovations and it looked nice. We used to go all the time in high school with different sports teams I was on. Brought back some memories!
Off to spend the rest of the night with Nick 🙂
I’m writing this post as I upload the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album- I’m With You- into my iTunes library. My boyfriend, Nick, went out on his lunch break to buy it for me and surprised me with it tonight! I can’t wait to run to it tomorrow! 🙂
Today I had some of my favorite meals.
For breakfast I had a homemade parfait. I layered Bear Naked vanilla crunch granola under Chobani vanilla greek yogurt and topped it with some fresh berries and a couple of walnuts. I think if I had to pick one meal to live off of for the rest of my life it might be this. I would never get sick of it!
I typically would buy the small (I think 6 oz.) cups of Chobani because I find it difficult to portion control this delicious yogurt out of the big ones but the supermarket had a limited selection.
Tomatoes from the garden!!
After breakfast I went to a local park to go for a run. The weather was PERFECT today. This was my first time running outdoors in a really long time- I’ve become tied to my treadmill runs lately! I feel like running outside and running on a treadmill are two totally different workouts! The stamina just does not translate for me. I think it could have to do with my ability to pace myself. So today I decided to not track my distance or pace but to just run. I only ran for about 25 minutes and finished with a 10 minute walk back to my car. I came home and did some weight-training with my 5 pound dumbbells. I did bi’s, tri’s, shoulders, some lunges, and 100 crunches before showering and getting ready for work.
Lunch was another of my favorite meals: salad! In college, I worked in a sandwich and salad shop and it was there that I grew a love for salads! One of my friends said to me recently that she only eats salads that she buys because she doesn’t like “home-made” ones. Prepared salads can be so expensive and they are really so simple to make! My salad had Romaine lettuce that I simply cut with my lettuce-scissors (I made that name up but this is one of the best inventions ever and one of the best gifts I’ve ever received courtesy of my boyfriend- Nick’s mom). I then added some red onion, an orange bell pepper, chick peas, and a yellow tomato (that comes from my boyfriend’s garden!). I love yellow tomatoes- way more than the red ones- so I love that I have a basically endless supply of them (for free!) in the summertime! 🙂 I also added to my salad a few pieces of Morning Star chicken meal starters which I was trying for the first time. I am a huge fan of Morning Star and love so many of their products but these weren’t for me. Something about the texture just didn’t do it for me- they tasted a bit rubbery. Luckily I had chick peas in there already so I wasn’t missing out on the protein.
After dinner (pot roast, courtesy of my mom), Nick and I took about a mile and a half walk that led us to Starbucks. We shared a java chip light frappuccino that was delicious. Walking around my neighborhood was a bit eerie due to the widespread power outages from Hurricane Irene. The streets were so dark! The peace and quiet was nice for our walk but I’m so grateful I still have my power!
My outdoor run got me curious and I started searching the internet for different takes on treadmill vs. outdoor running. Here’s a list of pros for each from sportsmedicine.about.com:
Treadmill Running Pros:
- No weather, temperature, or terrain issues.
- Can stop anytime you need or want.
- Can workout while watching tv if you like.
- Smooth, cushioned surface is easier on the joints .
- No concerns about personal safety.
Outdoor Running Pros:
- You can run anywhere.
- It’s much more functional for daily activities.
- You get to enjoy the scenery, get fresh air, notice changing seasons, weather, and enjoy nature.
- It’s generally more challenging and you expend more calories.
- It’s likely more motivating. You must complete a distance goal and can’t just stop & get off.
- Most people report a greater feeling of accomplishment running outside.
- You can take new routes and see something new everyday.
What’s better: treadmill or the great outdoors??
I think for me it really just depends on my mood!
I am finally joining the world of blogging! I was a bit apprehensive; a blog is basically just a modern-day diary except that anyone and everyone is allowed to read it! I’m also really excited to get started! So welcome to my very own healthy living blog!
Last weekend, I was stuck inside the house thanks to Hurricane Irene that hit the east coast pretty hard- I started to go a bit stir crazy by Sunday afternoon. Luckily though, I didn’t lose power and spent a majority of the weekend on the internet. I discovered a healthy living blog through Twitter and that one led me to several others and before I knew it I was hooked on them! I have a lot in common with a lot of these bloggers: I love cooking and baking and learning about health and wellness. So I decided that this would be a great place for me to be able to post all of my discoveries and findings. It’s also a great way to actually put my (otherwise useless?) bachelor’s degree in English to some good use!
Here we go…!
